For nearly a century, the Ward family has owned 142 acres of oil-rich land in Kilgore, Texas. Purchased by Albert Ward in 1923, the property became the foundation of Ward Oil & Gas, one of the oldest Black-owned oil operations in East Texas. The land survived racial intimidation, economic downturns and generations of powerful men who believed the Wards never deserved to own it. Now, after years of declining production and mounting debt, the family may finally lose everything.
In Manhattan, BRYCE TATE, 42, is a brilliant senior executive at Empire Oil, one of the largest energy corporations in America. Raised by a hardworking single mother in Washington, D.C., Bryce has spent twenty years building the life he once believed would make him whole. He has money, influence and the corner office within reach. When Empire Oil offers him the promotion he has chased his entire career, it comes with one final assignment: travel to Kilgore, evaluate Ward Oil and decide whether Empire should terminate its historic relationship with the struggling company.
Bryce expects to find an outdated operation that has survived too long on sentiment. Instead, he meets DESIRAE WARD, 40, the determined woman holding the company and her family together. Desirae knows every well, every employee and every sacrifice buried beneath the property. To her, Ward Oil is more than a business. The land proves that generations of her family lived, endured and built something powerful enough to pass down.
Bryce arrives armed with spreadsheets, corporate authority and a plan to cut losses. Desirae puts him in work boots and forces him to learn how Ward Oil truly lives. As Bryce works beside the family, he begins to understand that the company’s value cannot be measured by production reports alone. The people of Kilgore depend on it. The employees consider themselves family. And the Wards’ 95-year partnership with the Sterling family helped Empire Oil grow into the global corporation it is today.
While Bryce searches for a way to save the company, East Texas oil magnate TEX LANDRY quietly works to destroy it. Tex believes the Ward property should have belonged to his family, and he has spent years waiting for the Wards to become vulnerable. Using political influence, banking pressure and hidden operating violations, he accelerates an $8 million foreclosure. His most powerful weapon is BROOKE THOMAS, Desirae’s fiancé, whose failed investment left him $5,000,000 in debt to Tex. Terrified of losing his life and reputation, Brooke steals Ward Oil’s financial records and helps Tex engineer a sale that would erase the Ward name from the property forever.
As the crisis closes in, the family begins breaking beneath the pressure. Desirae’s father, PRESTON, reveals that he has Stage three lung cancer. Her youngest brother, MARCUS, is pulled toward revenge after his closest friend, BIG MIKE, is murdered because of violence connected to Marcus’s actions. Desirae discovers Brooke’s betrayal just as every financial option disappears. With only hours remaining before foreclosure, the Wards begin packing ninety five years of family history into boxes.
Then Bryce discovers three forgotten natural-gas wells hidden on the property.
The wells may contain reserves worth tens of millions of dollars, but the discovery means nothing unless Bryce can convince Empire Oil’s board to advance the family $10 million before the foreclosure deadline. To save the Wards, Bryce must risk his reputation and corporate future he spent his entire life building.
Empire Oil approves the deal hours before the deadline. Ward Oil survives, and Bryce receives the promotion he always wanted. He returns to Manhattan believing he has won, only to realize that the life waiting for him there no longer feels like home. In the season finale, Bryce walks away from Empire Oil and returns to Kilgore, choosing Desirae and the future they can build together.
But saving the land only begins the war. The gas discovery transforms Ward Oil from a dying family business into a valuable energy company, attracting investors, political forces and enemies far more dangerous than Brooke Thomas. Tex watches the family celebrate and vows to take everything from them.
BLACK GOLD is a sweeping family drama about ownership, ambition, love and the true meaning of success. At its center is a romance between two people whose lives force them to choose between the futures they planned and the home they never expected to find.
